Our 6th Newsletter is ready!

Since our Newsletter Issue 5 (June 2022), L4L have been actively involved in the H2020 CERTO project, which ended in September 2023 and resulted in an open-access data viewer, and several new and improved EO-based products and water quality indicators suitable for coastal lagoons. These outputs have been integrated into a prototype ready for uptake by the Copernicus Services.

The full migration from the old L4L site to the new site was completed in late 2023 and we are now hosted as an initiative under the newly branded Future Earth Coasts website. Our new site includes an interactive map showing URLs to key EO datasets for selected lagoons, globally. The number of lagoons and datasets featured is expected to grow over the coming years based on contributions from you.

Please spread the word and enjoy reading!

In a significant move to streamline access to valuable research and resources, the Future Earth Coasts Lagoons for Life working group has successfully migrated its website to the official FEC website. The transition, which was recently completed, aims to enhance accessibility and provide a centralized platform for researchers, practitioners, and stakeholders interested in lagoon ecosystems.

Lagoons for Life working group is an international initiative under the FEC framework that brings together natural and social scientists to co-develop holistic sustainable management strategies for coastal lagoons around the world. The working group focuses on the potential and challenges for satellite Earth Observation (EO) and look at how EO can add value to and support coastal lagoon management in combination with other data sources.

The website migration brings forth streamlined navigation, enhanced integration with FEC initiatives and the creation of a centralized hub accessible to a wide-ranging audience. This strategic consolidation aligns with FEC’s mission to unite scientific and societal communities in tackling urgent coastal issues.

FEC invites all interested parties to explore the new website that features information and useful resources on lagoons ecosystems including an interactive map showing lagoon case studies and existing EO datasets, ongoing research projects, collaborative opportunities. It is a FEC-wide platform for engaging in discussions and sharing knowledge and Lagoons for Life eagerly welcomes interaction through it.

For more information, please visit the Lagoons for Life website on the FEC website. To join Lagoons for Life or add your lagoon site to the interactive map, please send us an email.

The Future Earth Coasts (FEC) Workshop on the Assessment of Coastal Lagoons and Their Sustainability took place on Thursday, June 22nd, at the Eurolag10 conference held in Gdynia, Poland. With participation from 20 experts representing Europe, Latin America, and Africa, the workshop aimed to enhance our understanding of the sustainability of social-ecological coastal lagoon systems.

Coastal lagoons are intricate, social-ecological systems that offer a wide range of ecosystem services crucial for human welfare and well-being. Their sustainability hinges upon several key factors, including achieving good environmental and ecological status, ensuring responsible economic exploitation with minimal negative externalities, promoting social equity and community-based management of natural resources, and implementing effective governance practices spanning from local to transnational scales.

Assessing the sustainability of coastal lagoons requires the identification of locally adapted indicators covering environmental and ecological aspects, economic exploitation, social equity, and governance. The complexity of this multidisciplinary task poses a challenge in effectively communicating the results to non-specialized audiences, including stakeholders and decision-makers.

The workshop had specific objectives to address these challenges and advance our understanding of coastal lagoon sustainability. These objectives included:

  1. to identify appropriate locally adapted indicators
  2. to apply a uniform scale to the indicators (Bad-Excellent)
  3. to develop an assessment infographic assessing the sustainability of each lagoon
  4. to develop a conceptual diagram for each lagoon
  5. to identify the priorities for management in each lagoon
  6. to identify the commonalities and differences across the different lagoons

The workshop fostered fruitful discussions and knowledge exchange among participants, who brought diverse expertise and perspectives from different regions. The engagement of experts from Europe, Latin America, and Africa contributed to a comprehensive understanding of coastal lagoons’ sustainability challenges and potential solutions.

The outcomes of this workshop are expected to contribute significantly to the advancement of sustainable practices in coastal lagoons worldwide. By developing locally adapted indicators, assessment infographics, and conceptual diagrams, the workshop aimed to facilitate effective communication of research findings to stakeholders and decision-makers. Moreover, identifying management priorities and recognizing commonalities and differences across coastal lagoons will guide future collaborative efforts in achieving sustainable outcomes.

The FEC workshop at Eurolag10 provided a valuable platform for collaboration, learning, and knowledge exchange, underscoring the significance of interdisciplinary cooperation in addressing the complex sustainability issues faced by coastal lagoon systems.

This year’s EuroLag10 conference will be organised by the University of Gdansk, Institute of Oceanography, Gdynia, Poland, on 19-23 June.

Lagoons and estuaries play an important, buffering role between terrestrial and marine ecosystems. Those complex, dynamic and diverse waterbodies are usually put under huge anthropogenic pressure due to their productivity and location at the coastline. Lagoons and estuaries have traditionally provided numerous goods and services.

EuroLag10 invites presentations in the following topics: (1) assessment of the buffering role of lagoons and estuaries, (2) monitoring designs, indicators and status assessments, (3) new developments for conservation objectives and management measures – environmental preservation vs. economic importance, (4) modelling tools for integrated assessments, and (5) the impact of alien species on coastal ecosystems.
