This Future Earth-funded, cross-cutting initiative “Building Future Leadership: A Coastal Sustainability Value Chain” takes a unique and inclusive approach to fostering global capacity for coastal resilience. By combining academic and Indigenous knowledge systems, applying just transition principles, and promoting innovation through transdisciplinary collaboration, the project seeks to address the complex challenges coastal communities face today.

Each workshop in the series explores a critical link in the coastal sustainability value chain – ranging from understanding socio-ecological systems and supporting sustainable livelihoods, to scaling innovation and building long-term partnerships. This holistic structure ensures the initiative addresses the multifaceted nature of coastal change and equips early-career ocean professionals (ECOPs), researchers, and practitioners with the tools to lead transformational change.

We invite ECOPs, mentors, policymakers, and stakeholders across the coastal sustainability spectrum to explore the platform, participate in upcoming events, and become part of a global network building a more resilient coastal future. On April 29, 2025, the global, transdisciplinary initiative Building Future Leadership: A Coastal Sustainability Value Chain officially launched with a virtual kickoff meeting. This gathering brought together key representatives from a diverse consortium of institutions and knowledge holders. Led by Future Earth Coasts (FEC) in collaboration with Ocean Knowledge Action Network (Ocean KAN), the UN Ocean Decade-endorsed Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOP) Programme, and the journal Anthropocene Coasts, the project unites a powerful alliance committed to advancing inclusive and resilient coastal development.

The kickoff meeting laid the groundwork for a three-year journey focused on combining academic and Indigenous knowledge systems, advancing just transition, and fostering capacity development among Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs). Key discussions included project governance, workshop planning, cross-workstream collaboration, and communication strategies.

With a bold vision, the project aims to establish a global coastal sustainability value chain that empowers emerging leaders through immersive, hybrid workshops and cross-regional exchange. Covering themes such as knowledge integration, just transitions, ocean literacy, science communication, innovation, and transdisciplinary research, the workshops are designed not just to inform, but to transform how knowledge is shared, decisions are made, and leadership is nurtured.

By drawing on the collective expertise of academics, Indigenous knowledge holders, experienced practitioners, and international institutions, the initiative seeks to create lasting impact – building a global network of ECOPs who are culturally grounded, scientifically equipped, and prepared to guide coastal communities toward sustainable futures.

As the meeting concluded, partners agreed on key first-year milestones, including the launch of the initial workshop module, development of the project website (hosted by FEC), the rollout of ECOP special collections, the launch of the FEC Dialogue interview series, and several other collaborative initiatives to follow. With strong foundations and a collaborative spirit, the project moves forward with momentum and a clear mission: to empower the next generation of coastal leaders worldwide.

Future Earth Coasts (FEC) is excited to announce that its cross-cutting proposal, “Building Future Leadership: A Coastal Sustainability Value Chain,” has been awarded funding from the Future Earth Cross-Cutting Initiatives Grant Program. Set to launch in early 2025, this project is led by FEC in collaboration with the Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOP) Programme, Ocean KAN (Ocean Knowledge Action Network), and Anthropocene Coasts.

The primary aim of this initiative is to cultivate knowledge exchange, collaboration, and leadership development among Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) and stakeholders in coastal management. The project focuses on enhancing understanding and skills related to best practices in coastal zone management while fostering connections between future leaders. By engaging and empowering the next generation of leaders, this initiative seeks to improve decision-making processes for sustainable development and the preservation of coastal ecosystems.

This three-year project will feature a series of workshops addressing critical topics in coastal management, providing opportunities for ECOPs to connect and catalyze interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary collaboration. This workshop series represents a comprehensive value chain, beginning with the integration of Indigenous and academic knowledge tailored for traditional decision-makers. It then applies just transition principles to support resource-dependent coastal communities in adopting sustainable development practices. Dissemination and capacity building are facilitated through science publication training, policy advocacy, and ocean literacy workshops, empowering participants to share knowledge and influence policy effectively. Policy development is further strengthened by training on coastal hazard mitigation, equipping communities to address risks and enhance climate resilience. Innovation is promoted through blue economy governance workshops, which foster sustainable entrepreneurship and land-use planning. The series concludes with a transdisciplinary research application workshop, focusing on collaboration and partnerships to address complex coastal challenges and drive global positive change. The workshops will be conducted utilizing a flexible format that includes in-person, virtual, or hybrid sessions to accommodate both physical and remote participation.

The project’s implementation is eagerly anticipated and is poised to deliver sustained impact by enhancing capacity and fostering collaboration among ECOPs and other stakeholders. The skills and knowledge acquired through the workshops will empower ECOPs to implement best practices in coastal management and conservation, resulting in long-term improvements.
