The ASLO summer meeting 2018<\/a> will take place in Victoria, Canada, between 10-15 June 2018.<\/p>\n

The theme of the meeting is: “Water connects!” and will aim to bring people together to explore how (i) water transcends and connects all spheres: the lithosphere, atmosphere, and biosphere \u2013 from fresh to salty, from microscopic to macroscopic, and how (ii) water connects us to each other and to resources \u2013 across cultures and society, across politics and international boundaries.<\/p>\n

Lagoons for Life will be chairing a special session, called: “Unlocking the potential of Earth Observation in coastal lagoons and estuaries<\/strong><\/em>” and we are inviting interested parties to submit their abstracts to this session<\/span>. Please contact us<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n

Special session abstract:\u00a0<\/strong>Coastal lagoons and estuaries (CL&E) are hotspots of human settlement and activities, influenced by both land input and interaction with the sea. They have a complex biophysical structure whilst representing highly dynamic and productive ecosystems, However, their setting within the coastal landscape renders them vulnerable to shifts in physical and ecological characteristics from global environmental change, including climate change and anthropogenic activity, but our understanding of how they respond to change globally is limited. This understanding is necessary for the sustainable management of CL&E, and their ecosystem services, and assess the socio-environmental implications of future development in the context of global change. Management of CL&E is made difficult by virtue of the challenges in acquiring spatially and temporally explicit data that identify the dynamics of fluxes and change to water bodies. Earth Observation (EO) coupled with in situ <\/em>data provides a means to address these challenges, but considerable knowledge gaps exist in exploiting the full potential of EO in CL&E research. To address this issue, this session invites papers that cover (a) CL&E monitoring and management issues, (b) the potential of EO for CL&E monitoring and management, and (c) challenges posed and potential solutions towards future research in CL&E.<\/p>\n
