TALK <\/strong><\/p>\n It is over 50 years since the term \u2018integrated coastal zone management\u2019 become the good-practice standard for responding to the complex (and wicked) challenges facing the coast and coastal communities. Yet despite half a century of practice, integrated management remains elusive, and pressures on the coast (e.g., climate change, population growth, industrial development) increase. As the impacts of climate change are increasingly felt, disasters are increasingly common, as are calls for innovation and transformation to reduce vulnerability and support equitable transition to more sustainable (and just) coasts. How to achieve these transitions, when past actions have not delivered the large-scale successes sought, remains unclear. This presentation will share lessons from over five years of research on vulnerability, innovation and adaptive capacity in coastal Australia. It aims to prompt discussion around the next frontiers in coastal governance research and practice: what do we need to know (and do) to achieve systemic change?<\/p>\n Our speaker<\/strong><\/p>\n Dr Carmen Elrick-Barr<\/strong><\/p>\n Dr Carmen Elrick-Barr is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of the Sunshine Coast, Australia, where her research focuses on the human dimensions of coastal conservation and management, at the nexus of social science and policy. Dr Elrick-Barr\u2019s brings over 17 years of experience in academia and the private sector to issues of climate change adaptation and coastal governance. She has worked in Asia, Europe and Oceania for international and national governments and non-government organisations. Her research currently addresses three intersecting themes: (i) vulnerability, adaptive capacity, adaptation, and transformation; (ii) coastal policy and governance; and (iii) social values and community engagement. Dr Elrick-Barr is on the board of the leading international journal for coastal management (Ocean and Coastal Management<\/em>), is Chair of the Western Australian Coastal Marine Network, and State representative for the West Australian branch of the Australian Coastal Society.<\/p>\n Registration <\/strong><\/p>\n The event is free to attend and open to all.
