In response to the globally endorsed <a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabledevelopment.un.org\/post2015\/transformingourworld\">Agenda 2030<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.un.org\/sustainabledevelopment\/sustainable-development-goals\/\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/a> (SDGs), the conference theme was \u2018Land system science: understanding realities and developing solutions\u2019. With nearly 700 attendees, social-ecological interactions around land use in an interdisciplinary manner and at different levels of scale were extensively explored.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7238\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120742\/IMG_1020-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7238\" class=\"wp-image-7238 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120742\/IMG_1020-1.jpg\" alt=\"img_1020\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120742\/IMG_1020-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120742\/IMG_1020-1-980x735.jpg 980w, https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120742\/IMG_1020-1-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1000px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7238\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Water-Food-Energy Nexus, Future Earth<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Future Earth Coasts organised and chaired a session at the GLP-OSM entitled \u2018Managing Urbanisation Pressures in the Coastal Zone in the Context of the Blue Economy and Global Environmental Change\u2019 where we were able to showcase some of the excellent coastal research being done both in China and globally. Discussions ranging from the impacts of urbanization and development on wetlands to the bio-accumulation of contaminants in crops grow in the coastal zone in China sat alongside presentations looking at the Water-Food-Energy Nexus in the MENA region.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7239\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120741\/IMG_1016-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7239\" class=\"wp-image-7239 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120741\/IMG_1016-1.jpg\" alt=\"img_1016\" width=\"1000\" height=\"750\" srcset=\"https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120741\/IMG_1016-1.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120741\/IMG_1016-1-980x735.jpg 980w, https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120741\/IMG_1016-1-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1000px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7239\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Exhibition booths at the GLP-OSM<\/p><\/div>\n<p>One key area to highlight from the session, raised in several presentations, is the importance of partnerships and research communities. With two Future Earth <a href=\"http:\/\/futureearth.org\/projects\">core projects<\/a> presenting (FEC and GLP), talk of <a href=\"http:\/\/futureearth.org\/knowledge-action-networks\">Knowledge-Action Networks<\/a> was never far away and calls to join the <a href=\"http:\/\/futureearth.org\/join-future-earth-open-network\">Future Earth Open Network<\/a> were made loud and clear. Important connections were also made with another core project while in Beijing, the <a href=\"http:\/\/irg.bnu.edu.cn\/\">Integrated Risk Governance Project<\/a> (IRG), and collaborative opportunities between our IPOs are currently being explored.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7233\" style=\"width: 748px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120744\/GLP-1-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7233\" class=\"wp-image-7233 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120744\/GLP-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"glp-1\" width=\"738\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120744\/GLP-1-1.jpg 738w, https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120744\/GLP-1-1-480x270.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 738px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7233\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Post GLP-OSM session discussions<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While international conferences are without doubt important for collaboration and knowledge transfer, Yantai offered a much more intimate setting to\u00a0further develop important working relationships. Back in August, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.futureearthcoasts.org\/strengthening-connections-the-human-side-of-global-environmental-change-research\/\">Dr Chen Tu visited our IPO<\/a> from the <a href=\"http:\/\/english.yic.cas.cn\/\">Yantai Institute of Coastal Zone Research<\/a> (YIC-CAS).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7235\" style=\"width: 850px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120744\/GLP-3-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7235\" class=\"wp-image-7235 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120744\/GLP-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"glp-3\" width=\"840\" height=\"329\" srcset=\"https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120744\/GLP-3-1.jpg 840w, https:\/\/futureearthcoasts.s3.eu-west-2.amazonaws.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/14120744\/GLP-3-1-480x188.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 840px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7235\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Visiting YIC-CAS in Yantai<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">This was a chance for our science officer, Shona Paterson, to reciprocate the visit. During the visit she was able to interact with a number of early career scientists and Ph.D. students at the institute and learn about the broad range of research efforts underway, a truly rewarding experience. Supporting young scientists has to be a major part of all global research projects and is without question an important part of the FEC mission.
