Building Future Leadership:
A Coastal Sustainability Value Chain
An initiative combining academic and indigenous knowledge with just transition principles and collaboration for a better coastal resilience.
The Building Future Leadership: A Coastal Sustainability Value Chain project combines academic and Indigenous knowledge with just transition principles and collaborative efforts to enhance coastal resilience. Each workshop in this series addresses a key component of the value chain, from integrating diverse knowledge systems and supporting sustainable practices to fostering innovation and building partnerships. This comprehensive approach aims to ensure the long-term sustainability and resilience of coastal ecosystems and communities.
About Building Future Leadership
Empowering Early Career Ocean Professionals (ECOPs) and fostering sustainable development requires effective knowledge generation, dissemination, and uptake. By bridging the gap between scientific research and local decision-making, we ensure cutting-edge technology, innovative methodologies, and ocean literacy are accessible to all stakeholders. This initiative enhances ECOPs’ capacity, combining scientific and indigenous knowledge to respect cultural heritage and promote resilience. Workshops will be hybrid sessions facilitated by Future Earth Coasts, ECOP Programme nodes, and Ocean KAN, drawing ECOP participants from across regions through a competitive application process. Host institutions will provide venues and logistical support, ensuring global participation and enhancing the feasibility and reach of the workshops.
Objectives
Foster knowledge exchange, collaboration, and leadership development among professionals and stakeholders in coastal management.
Enhance understanding of best practices and skills related to coastal zone management while fostering connections between future leaders.
Improve decision-making processes for sustainable development and preservation of coastal ecosystems by engaging and empowering the next generation of leaders.
Workshop Series: A Coastal Sustainability Value Chain
This workshop series represents a comprehensive value chain, beginning with the combination of Indigenous and academic knowledge tailored for traditional decision-makers. It then applies just transition principles to support resource-dependent coastal communities in adopting sustainable development practices. Dissemination and capacity building are facilitated through science publication training, policy advocacy, and ocean literacy workshops, empowering participants to share knowledge and influence policy effectively. Policy development is further strengthened by training on coastal hazard mitigation, equipping communities to address risks and enhance climate resilience. Innovation is promoted through blue economy governance workshops, which foster sustainable entrepreneurship and land-use planning. The series concludes with a transdisciplinary research application workshop, focusing on collaboration and partnerships to address complex coastal challenges and drive global positive change.
The workshops will be conducted utilizing a flexible format that includes in-person, virtual, or hybrid sessions to accommodate both physical and remote participation.
