Future Earth Coasts (https://www.futureearthcoasts.org/) is a global research network of Future Earth, bringing together researchers, practitioners, and decision-makers to co-produce knowledge and solutions for the urgent sustainability challenges facing coastal systems. Our vision is to ensure a sustainable, just, and resilient future for both society and nature along the world’s coasts. We achieve this by fostering innovative, integrated, and collaborative research and knowledge mobilization.
The Executive Committee of FEC is responsible for overseeing the direction and implementation of FEC’s work. This includes defining, developing, and prioritizing plans; guiding the implementation of the Research Strategy; promoting FEC’s goals and outcomes at scientific and stakeholder events; and facilitating interactions with Future Earth and other relevant international programs and stakeholder groups.
Role of FEC Co-Chairs
FEC Co-Chairs play a key leadership role in shaping the strategic direction, scientific agenda, and community engagement of FEC. As ex officio chairs of the Executive Committee, Co-Chairs are expected to actively lead and guide FEC’s strategic goals and initiatives. Working collaboratively with the FEC Vice-Chair, Co-Executive directors, and International Project Offices, the Co-Chairs help ensure that FEC continues to grow as a dynamic and influential global network.
Key responsibilities include:
- Chairing the FEC Executive Committee meetings as required
- Facilitating dispute resolution procedures, if necessary
- Maintaining strategic oversight of FEC plans and activities
- Representing FEC as a figurehead at relevant scientific and stakeholder events
- Working closely with the other Co-Chair and Vice-Chair to distribute tasks and responsibilities
- Providing support, guidance, and mentorship to the FEC Co-Executive directors

Commitment
Serving as an FEC Co-Chair requires a willingness to invest the time necessary to fulfill leadership responsibilities, attend and chair meetings, and represent FEC in various international fora. Co-Chairs are expected to contribute meaningfully to the development and implementation of FEC’s goals and initiatives.
Eligibility and Desired Qualities
We welcome both nominations and self-nominations from individuals who meet the following criteria:
- A proven track record of leadership and scholarship in coastal sustainability
- Experience in international, interdisciplinary, and multi-stakeholder environments
- A demonstrated commitment to equity, inclusiveness, and transdisciplinary collaboration
- Strategic vision and the ability to mentor and inspire others
- Strong communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills
